What Causes Toenail Fungus?
Any part of our bodies can be affected by fungal infections. The Fungi lives in and on the body together with other bacteria. But it is only until the fungus start to grow, that a person can get an infection. Also called, Onychomycosis, toenail fungus is an infection caused by the fungi that affect both the toenails and fingernails.
It is a common condition that is characterized by a white or yellow spot under the tip of a person’s nails. If left untreated, the infection goes deeper, and sooner or later your nails begin to discolor, thicken and crumble. But what causes this infection? Read this article to find out.
Causes of Toenail Infection
This condition begins when there is an overgrowth of fungi under or on the nail. Because fungi survive in a warm and moist environment, the environment beneath your nails makes it favorable for them to overpopulate.
But you can get nail infection with fungi that are already present in your body. This condition is also contagious, meaning if you get in contact with a person who has it, there are high chances that they’ll spread it to you.
Proper measures should, therefore, be taken to avoid getting infected with this fungi. For instance, avoid wearing closed shoes all the time and if you go to a nail spa, always ask how they disinfect their working tools and how often they do that.
